Desert Mission Food Bank Urgently Seeks Volunteers Amid Rising Demand |
North Phoenix food bank calls for community support to meet increasing needs |
Desert Mission Food Bank in north Phoenix is experiencing a significant surge in demand, now serving approximately 6,000 individuals monthly—a threefold increase since 2021.
To address this growing need, the food bank is calling for more volunteers to assist with daily operations, including sorting food, bagging produce, serving families, and assembling snack packs for children.
Krystina Toscas, Engagement Manager at Desert Mission, highlighted the urgency: "Right now, in particular, all of the students have gone back to school, and the snowbirds aren't quite here yet. So we have this gap."
Volunteers are essential year-round, but the summer months are especially critical due to seasonal volunteer shortages.
Individuals aged 16 and older (or 14 with an adult chaperone) are encouraged to participate. Volunteers can commit to two-hour shifts between Monday and Friday, with additional opportunities during special events.
Those interested can sign up through the Desert Mission website.
By dedicating a small amount of time, volunteers can make a substantial impact on the lives of those facing food insecurity in the Phoenix community. |
